Toenende Handschrift II

Description

That...weird ass band.

After months of finishing projects I finally could create something out of fun. So as a water colour practice I used a scene of the German animation short "Tönende Handschrift II" by Rudolf Pfenninger from 1932.

It was just before the Nazis took over Germany and influenced the film industry. Before that and in the 1920s German animators were experimental and created quite unusual films that, however, fit to the time period.
Some of them are not that exciting compared to American cartoons with real stories and characters.
Rudolf Pfenninger's speciality was the attempt to combine music and animation. You can call his "Tönende Handschrift" (translated into "Sounding Handwriting") an early, short version of "Fantasia" with an electronic soundtrack.

One of his cartoons starred fishy creatures, good and evil, chasing each other and doing other stuff underwater, it's quite creepy. The cast also included this band providing party music at the beginning.

Although the music quickly gets on your nerves, the animation is very good, I must say.

Painted with water colours (and because the cartoon was in black & white I chose the colours myself :)).

Where did you find it? I only found a not so good video about it on youtube where I couldn't make out half of the scenes. It sounds really interesting and to me.
